Each week we highlight five things affecting the life sciences industry. Here’s the latest.
China aims to capture 25% of global first-in-class drug innovation by 2030
- China unveiled a biotechnology strategy targeting 3.5 trillion yuan ($522 billion) in industry revenue, 20% annual sector growth, five blockbuster drugs and 25% of globally marketed first-in-class medicines originating from China by 2030.
- BioSpace reports that the plan underscores China’s continued emergence as a global biotech innovation hub, with licensing deal values exceeding $120 billion and growing 36% year-over-year. In response, U.S. industry leaders caution against increasing dependence on Chinese biotech capabilities and supply chains.
UK and Singapore open talks to reduce pharmaceutical trade barriers
- The UK and Singapore launched negotiations for a mutual recognition agreement covering good manufacturing practices standards for pharmaceutical products, expanding the already growing trade relationship, one that was worth £12 billion in 2024.
- The proposed agreement would allow regulators to rely on each other’s inspection results, reducing duplicative requirements and costs for medicine trade while retaining UK regulatory standards.
European pharma leaders warn EU is losing ground in global biopharma innovation
- Nine major European pharmaceutical companies urged European Union leaders to strengthen incentives for innovation, warning that Europe is losing biopharma competitiveness to the U.S. and China.
- The companies argue that restrictive drug pricing policies, weaker intellectual property protections, and fragmented reimbursement systems discourage investment and send a message that Europe does not value innovation. They called for faster clinical trial processes, stronger IP protections, more supportive digital policies and greater healthcare investment to restore Europe’s position as a global life sciences leader.
CMS proposes major Medicare lab test reimbursement cuts
- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed Medicare lab reimbursement cuts beginning in 2027 after determining Medicare pays about 16% more than private insurers for many tests. The proposal aims to better align Medicare payment rates with private-sector rates and reduce above-market reimbursements, with projected savings of $1 billion annually.
- According to Medtech Dive, the American Clinical Laboratory Association warned the cuts could reduce funding for nearly 1,200 lab tests, potentially limiting patient access and slowing diagnostic innovation.
AI drug discovery firm files IPO as partnerships fuel growth
- An artificial intelligence-driven biotechnology company has filed for an initial public offering to fund development of its AI-discovered pipeline. Its lead HER2-targeted oncology drug is currently in Phase 1, with a planned registrational trial in 2027.
- According to Fierce Biotech, the company has built momentum through major fundraising rounds and partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies, validating its AI-driven drug discovery platform and providing additional capital to advance its pipeline.
